Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Topics for 'Tea with Dr. B'

Dr. Tanyika Mobley, a diversity, equity and inclusion officer, will be the guest speaker at Virginia Peninsula Community College’s January “Tea with Dr. B” event.

Taking place Jan. 18 at Hampton's Peninsula Workforce Development Center on Butler Farm Road, the 3 - 4 p.m. event is the third installment of Dr. Towuanna Porter Brannon's presidential leadership series. The topics will include mental health and continuous enrichment.

Mobley works for Virginia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. Among her responsibilities is ensuring equitable resources, treatment, and outcomes for Virginia residents.

In addition, Mobley is a psychologist, researcher, author and educator. She has extensive experience with adolescents and young adults, minorities, and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She also is a certified trainer.

Brannon aims to make the leadership series an annual occurrence. She sees colleges as the perfect places to facilitate meaningful discussions on important topics. Those discussions are more impactful, she said, when they involve topics where people have differing and passionate viewpoints.

By presenting these talks, Brannon said it’s possible to normalize open and in-person discussions and civil debate on topics that are important. The topics were selected after conversations she had with VPCC faculty, staff, students and community members.

The next event in the series is scheduled for Feb. 22 and will feature entrepreneur and health advocate Whitteney Guyton.

The first of the series took place Oct. 12 featuring Dr. Jamel K. Donnor of the College of William & Mary discussing critical race theory.

That was followed Nov. 30 by Mike Petters, a former president and CEO of Huntington Ingalls Industries, who discussed service to country and others.
